The Taussig Cancer Institute at Cleveland Clinic is proud to announce that legendary singer, Michael

McDonald, will headline the 17th annual “An Evening with Scott Hamilton and Friends” ice show and gala, planned for Saturday, Nov. 5, at Quicken Loans Arena. Every year, Scott Hamilton reaches out to his closest friends in the music and skating worlds to host a truly must-see event, which raises funds for cancer research, education and survivorship programs at Cleveland Clinic’s Taussig Cancer Institute. Tickets go on sale Sept. 26.

Distinctive and soulful, McDonald’s voice is one of the most yearningly emotive instruments of our times. To this add formidable songwriting and keyboard skills, and you have an artist who has been a singular musical presence for four decades. From ‘70s-era Doobie Brothers classics such as “What A Fool Believes” and solo hits like “I Keep Forgettin’” through two highly-acclaimed Motown albums, genre-busting guest spots and innovative concept shows, the five-time Grammy Award winning McDonald is both timeless and ever-evolving.

McDonald’s career began as a session musician and singer before being invited to join Steely Dan. Over the course of four classic albums, from Katy Lied to Gaucho, McDonald became an integral part of the group’s sound, singing background vocals on FM staples like “Black Friday” and “Peg.” In the mid-‘70s, McDonald joined The Doobie Brothers, helping the band redefine their funky R & B sound as a singer, keyboardist and songwriter on such Top 40 singles as “Takin’ It To The Streets,” “It Keeps You Runnin’,” “Minute By Minute” and “What A Fool Believes.” Beyond his hits with The Doobies, McDonald has lent his voice to records by artists including Ray Charles, Aretha Franklin, Elton John, Joni Mitchell, Vince Gill and Grizzly Bear.

Performing with McDonald at the event will be skaters Katia Gordeeva, Ilia Kulik, Jeff Buttle, Jeremy Abbott, Jason Brown, Alissa Czisny, Kiira Korpi, Mirai Nagasu, Steven Cousins, Kim Navarro & Brent Bommentre, and Sinead Kerr & John Kerr.

Funds raised from “An Evening with Scott Hamilton & Friends” – founded in 1999 after Hamilton’s experience with testicular cancer and then a benign brain tumor – supports three major programs: the 4th Angel Mentoring Program designed to match newly diagnosed patients with trained volunteers who are also cancer survivors as well as matching new caregivers with a mentor, Chemocare.com a unique website designed to help patients better understand the chemotherapy experience, and research funding.

This year’s “An Evening with Scott Hamilton and Friends,” presented by Medical Mutual of Ohio, will kick off with an ice show at 5 p.m. at Quicken Loans Arena. A black-tie gala, hosted by philanthropist Maria Miller, follows at 7 p.m. at the Hilton Cleveland Downtown Hotel. Tickets for the ice show will go on sale Sept. 26 and start at $32.50. Tickets will be available through www.theQarena.com, Quicken Loans Arena Box Office, all northern Ohio Discount Drug Mart locations or by calling 888.894.9424. Tickets to the gala dinner are available by calling 216.445.0099.
