For these reasons, we are extending the postponement of scheduled nonessential surgeries requiring a hospital bed, as well as all nonessential outpatient/ambulatory surgeries, at our Ohio hospitals through Sunday, Jan. 30, 2022. At this time, this postponement does not include our ambulatory surgery centers (ASCs) or ambulatory endoscopy centers (AECs).
Essential, urgent or emergent surgeries, or those in need of surgery for cancer or transplant, will continue to be scheduled during this period. We will evaluate our scheduled surgical patients as the pandemic continues.
We urge our communities to take precautions and receive their COVID-19 vaccine, as the majority of our patients hospitalized with COVID-19 are unvaccinated.

UPDATE 12/10: Lutheran Hospital will also be postponing nonessential surgeries requiring a hospital bed, starting Monday, Dec. 13, through Friday, Dec. 17, 2021. We will continue to evaluate our scheduled surgical patients as the pandemic continues.
As the COVID-19 pandemic continues, we are adapting to best serve our patients and community.
Recently, there has been a plateau in daily admissions of patients with COVID-19 to our nursing units, as well as a decrease in our preoperative COVID-19 positivity rates. Therefore, beginning, Jan. 4, 2021, we will resume non-essential surgeries that require an overnight hospital stay in Ohio as well as reactivate surgical care at our Marymount Ambulatory Surgery Center.
We will continue to monitor our scheduled surgical cases based on hospital bed capacity and caregiver support as we begin 2021. We are still caring for a significant number of patients with COVID-19; however, we currently have the ability and capacity to serve all of our patients while safely resuming our surgical services.
As COVID-19 cases remain high in Ohio, we encourage everyone to help keep our community safe and help limit the spread of the virus by remaining vigilant in wearing masks, social distancing, and washing your hands.
As COVID-19 cases in Ohio continue to climb, we continue to adapt to best serve our patients and community.
From Dec. 7, 2020 through Jan. 4. 2021, we will postpone all nonessential inpatient surgeries requiring a hospital bed or an Intensive Care Unit (ICU) bed in our Ohio locations, with the exception of Lutheran Hospital.
It is important to understand that our hospitals remain safe and open to care for our community. Essential and urgent inpatient surgeries — including heart, cancer, pediatrics, transplantation and neurological cases —will continue as scheduled.
During this time, all nonessential outpatient surgeries in Ohio will continue, and all Ambulatory Surgery Centers (ASCs) and Ambulatory Endoscopy Surgery Centers (AECs) will remain open, with the exception of the Marymount ASC. These patients will continue to be redirected to Marymount Hospital or another Cleveland Clinic location for procedures.
We are currently experiencing the highest volume of patients with COVID-19 since the start of the pandemic. With these steps, we are proactively making more beds available to accommodate what we anticipate will be a continued increase in COVID-19 patients needing hospitalization.
We will reevaluate our scheduled surgical cases as the pandemic continues. We encourage everyone to help keep our community safe and help limit the spread of the virus by remaining vigilant in wearing masks, social distancing, and washing your hands.
Beginning Monday, Nov. 23, we will resume scheduled nonessential inpatient surgeries not expecting an ICU stay at all of our Ohio hospitals. We will continue the temporary suspension of outpatient surgical care at the Marymount Ambulatory Surgery Center and will reevaluate in mid-December. These patients will be redirected to Marymount Hospital or another Cleveland Clinic location for procedures, and caregivers will be redeployed to work at the hospital, enabling us to expand the numbers of beds for patients with COVID-19.

We will continue to re-evaluate our scheduled surgical cases each week based on hospital occupancy and admissions of patients with COVID-19. As the pandemic evolves, we will continue to take steps that ensure we are meeting the needs of our patients and keeping our patients and caregivers safe.
As the numbers of COVID-19 cases are rising dramatically in Northeast Ohio, Cleveland Clinic continues to evolve our practices.
We are now seeing the highest numbers of patients with COVID-19 since the start of the pandemic. In order to provide the safest and highest quality care of patients, we are proactively extending our postponement of nonessential surgical cases that require an inpatient stay through Friday, November 20th. As cases rise in Northeast Ohio, we are taking proactive steps to ensure that we have the staffing and resources needed to continue safely caring for our patients. We are postponing nonessential surgical cases that require an inpatient hospital stay at most Cleveland Clinic Ohio hospitals for Friday, Nov. 13, and Monday, Nov. 16.These nonessential cases can be safely rescheduled for a later date.
