LONDON: Cleveland Clinic London promotes Professor Richard Cohen to Medical Director and Professor Charles Knowles to Chief Academic Officer. Promotions follow the continued expansion of Cleveland Clinic London, as the organisation brings its doctor-led model of care – that is innovative, empathetic, and based on research and education – to more patients across the UK healthcare market.

Professor Richard Cohen, Medical Director



Appointed to the role of Medical Director at Cleveland Clinic London, Professor Richard Cohen is responsible for the smooth running of clinical services at the hospital. He is involved in continuous improvement, efficiency, and utilization of clinical services along with strategic growth. In addition, he plays a critical role in ensuring that the organization continues its legacy of providing a world-class patient care experience built around the best practices and core values of Cleveland Clinic. He assumed the position May of 2023, alongside his existing roles of Consultant Colorectal surgeon, Chief of Surgery and Chair of the Digestive Disease and Integrated Surgery Institutes.



Professor Cohen is a leading colorectal surgeon and known as a pioneer of introducing new surgical techniques to the United Kingdom. Prior to his leadership roles at Cleveland Clinic London, Professor Cohen held several Divisional Clinical Director roles at UCLH. He is Professor of Surgery at UCL and Clinical Professor of Surgery at Cleveland Clinic Lerner School of Medicine. Alongside this work, his areas of interest include the training, development, and education of junior surgeons as well as several ongoing research projects at UCL.

Professor Charles Knowles assumed the role of Chief Academic Officer (CAO) on June 1, 2023, in addition to his existing roles as Cleveland Clinic London’s Lead for Colorectal Surgery and Clinical Director of Research. In his new role, Professor Knowles seeks to enhance and maximize the impact of the organization’s academic programs as well as research and education partnerships. He works collaboratively with colleagues across the global Cleveland Clinic footprint, contributing to the enterprise’s strategic development and growth across markets.



Professor Knowles is a recognized champion for academics, education and research and has a strong track record of delivering high-quality research and shaping clinical practice for the benefit of patients around the world. In addition to his roles at Cleveland Clinic London, Professor Knowles is Professor of Surgery at Queen Mary University of London and an honorary Consultant Colorectal Surgeon at Barts Health NHS Trust and St Marks Hospital. He holds honorary chairs at University College of London and the University of Antwerp.
