Cleveland Clinic Weston Hospital’s Emergency Department has been selected as a recipient of the Emergency Nurses Association’s 2023 – 2026 Lantern Award. The Emergency Nurses Association bestows the Lantern Award on emergency departments that exemplify exceptional practice and innovative performance in the core areas of nursing leadership, practice, education, advocacy, and research.
With 42 private rooms and 10 fast-track bays, the Cleveland Clinic Weston Hospital Emergency Department is open 24/7 with care by providers from more than 55 specialties.
“We are very pleased to receive the Lantern Award and to be recognized for the measures we have taken to enhance the overall experience of our patients,” said Deborah Riggs, MSN, RN, Director of Emergency Services at Cleveland Clinic Weston Hospital. “Our dedicated and highly experienced providers and caregivers have been successful in increasing efficiencies, improving patient flow, and reducing wait times.”
To accomplish these goals, the Weston Hospital Emergency Department (ED) implemented a provider-in-triage process to quickly assess and treat patients upon arrival. A split-flow model was also introduced to process minor complaints through a Fast Track area. More complex cases are managed through triage and the main ED. In addition, an “ED Admit Unit” was created to provide a dedicated area within the ED for admitted boarding patients to receive inpatient services while awaiting admission to a hospital unit.
“All of these initiatives have combined to improve our patients’ experience from the time they enter the emergency department through discharge,” Riggs said.
Weston Hospital’s Emergency Department was one of 53 in the U.S. to meet the Lantern Award criteria. The Lantern Award is a visible symbol of an emergency department’s commitment to quality, safety, a healthy work environment, and innovation in nursing practice and emergency care.
