Cleveland Clinic is a powerful economic engine – uplifting communities, bolstering businesses and launching careers everywhere it has a presence. In each location the health system operates, it is an economic generator and a dedicated community partner.

Community benefit, which Cleveland Clinic reports annually to the IRS, is one measure of the health system’s impact on the community. In 2023, it contributed $1.46 billion in community benefit for its operations in Ohio, Florida and Nevada.

Two key components of community benefit are providing financial assistance and covering Medicaid shortfall for patients. Cleveland Clinic is a leading provider of Medicaid services in Ohio. In 2023 the health system spent more than $640 million to cover care for 344,000 patients with Medicaid. Financial assistance is the amount provided to those patients unable to pay some or all their medical bills. In 2023, Cleveland Clinic spent $261 million to provide more than 111,000 of its patients with free or discounted medically necessary care.

“We are proud to nurture our patients, caregivers and their families who live and work in the communities we call home.,” said Tom Mihaljevic, M.D., Cleveland Clinic CEO and President, and holder of the Morton L. Mandel CEO Chair. "We regularly engage with community members and leaders, asking how we can help, then taking action. Our influence on economic conditions helps uplift communities and make meaningful change.”

Cleveland Clinic's most recent Economic and Fiscal Impact report measures its impact on the economy. This study was conducted by Silverlode Consulting, a leading economic impact analysis firm.

The Economic and Fiscal Impact report details Cleveland Clinic’s financial impact locally, regionally and nationally. The health system invests in hometown companies through its purchases, and the taxes generated by its activities help local governments provide crucial services and infrastructure. Cleveland Clinic’s construction projects generate jobs and revenue, and caregivers use their earnings to buy goods and services, further extending its economic benefit.

In 2023, the total value of Cleveland Clinic’s economic activity was $37.6 billion. Its operations and construction activity in Ohio, Florida and Nevada supported 122,643 households, and $6.5 billion in local, state and federal tax revenue.

In Ohio, Florida and Nevada, Cleveland Clinic directly supported an estimated 74,298 jobs in 2023. These direct jobs sustained an additional 109,283 indirect jobs, resulting in a total of 183,581 U.S. jobs supported by Cleveland Clinic.

“Economic stability can have a powerful impact on one’s health and well-being.” said Vickie Eaton Johnson, Cleveland Clinic’s Chief Community Officer. “By investing in neighborhood development projects, including affordable housing; contracting with diverse suppliers to grow businesses and increase employment; recruiting, training and hiring people from local communities, we can continue making a tangible difference.”

Cleveland Clinic purchased an estimated $6.61 billion in goods and services from U.S. companies. Additionally, patients and others visiting Cleveland Clinic spent an estimated $267.2 million in the states of Ohio, Florida, and Nevada.

“We are touching lives each day through investments in our communities," said Dennis Laraway, Cleveland Clinic Chief Financial Officer. "Our history of financial stewardship has allowed us to continue this support, regardless of financial pressure we may be experiencing. By listening to our neighbors, and dedicating resources to their areas of need, we can have the greatest impact."

To complete its economic and fiscal impact study, Cleveland Clinic provided employment, payroll, construction spending and other operational data necessary to Silverlode Consulting for the development of the economic impact estimates.
