Cleveland Clinic Indian River Hospital’s Welsh Heart Center has earned a 3-star designation, the highest possible, for coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) procedures from The Society of Thoracic Surgeons (STS), one of the most respected organizations in cardiac surgery quality assessment.

“We are proud to receive the highest rating possible from The Society of Thoracic Surgeons, which speaks to the exceptional care our patients receive and the dedication of our cardiac surgery team,” says James Wudel, MD, cardiac surgeon and Director of the Welsh Heart Center at Cleveland Clinic Indian River Hospital. “This designation reflects our commitment to quality, safety and continuous improvement.”

Approximately 20% of hospitals participating in the STS Adult Cardiac Surgery Database achieve the 3-star rating for CABG procedures. The rating is based on an analysis of national data collected over a three-year period, from Jan. 2022 to Dec. 2024.

The STS star rating system is a widely respected benchmark of surgical quality, based on objective data and risk-adjusted outcomes. It enables hospitals to voluntarily report performance to peers and the public, promoting transparency and accountability.
