CLEVELAND – The Super Bowl is this Sunday and millions will be tuning in, not just for the game, but the celebrities too.

So, what is it about the famous that keeps us captivated?

“Paying attention to celebrity news, for many people, is simply an escape from the daily stressors of everyday life,” said Susan Albers, PsyD, psychologist for Cleveland Clinic. “It also creates entertainment. We can live vicariously through their lives, imagining what it would be like to live a glamorous lifestyle.”

Dr. Albers said when someone is reading or watching celebrity news, they may get a hit of dopamine in the brain. Dopamine is often called a “feel good” hormone.

People may also experience an “illusion of intimacy,” which makes them feel like the celebrity is a personal friend.

Social media has amplified this type of connection since they are often giving fans an inside look at their lives. The same goes for their relationships.

“We observe how celebrities navigate the highs and lows of their relationships. They give us inspiration, ideas, and sometimes for better or for worse, we compare our relationships, our actions to celebrities,” said Dr. Albers.

She said there’s a big difference between fascination and unhealthy obsession with a celebrity.

Signs someone could be obsessed include constantly monitoring their activity and thinking about them non-stop.
