Our Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine students experienced “Match Day” on March 15, the day medical students across the nation find out where they are headed for residency. Match Day signifies the end of medical school training and the beginning of clinical training as a resident.

This Match Day, hundreds of Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine, including the Lerner College of Medicine (CCLCM) students, family members and faculty gathered at the Health Education Campus where, at precisely noon, the students opened their envelopes containing their match information.

Maeve Pascoe, who will train in neurology, matched to the University of Michigan. “Not only are they a top program for neurology clinical education and research, but they also foster leadership, collaboration and creativity. I can’t thank CCLCM enough for an incredible clinical education and all the opportunities I’ve had to develop skills for residency and my future career as a physician investigator.”

The top residency program chosen by our students this year is internal medicine. Of the program’s 33 graduating students, nine are staying at Cleveland Clinic for their residencies, eight at the Cleveland Clinic’s main campus in Ohio and one at Cleveland Clinic Florida. Of the 204 total Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine students who matched (which include those from CCLCM, the University Program and Medical Scientist Training Program), 11% are coming to Cleveland Clinic for training.

Precious Oyem, who will train in orthopaedic surgery, is one such student. “I am over the moon to have the privilege of training at Cleveland Clinic, one of the best medical institutions in the world. I am grateful for the opportunity to have received my medical education at CCLCM and cannot wait to apply everything I have learned.”

In addition, we celebrate the 27 graduates from the Ohio University Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine who will train at Cleveland Clinic. Twenty-one of the students matched to Cleveland Clinic. Six additional students, who are part of the Heritage Transformative Care Continuum program and have trained at Cleveland Clinic as part of their educational experience, automatically stay at Cleveland Clinic through residency.

In 2015, Cleveland Clinic and Heritage College established a Cleveland campus at South Pointe Hospital to train primary care physicians who will stay in Ohio following graduation.
