Student Spotlight: Angela Wei

CCLCM student Angela Wei

Tell us about yourself.

I grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area and went to undergrad at Duke University, where I studied biology. I’m currently obtaining a master’s degree in clinical research in addition to my medical degree. I’m ecstatic to be staying at Cleveland Clinic for dermatology residency!

You said the absence of exams and grades at CCLCM was refreshing. Tell us more.

We’re able to prioritize our learning to develop a strong knowledge base that will serve us well as future clinicians, rather than simply studying for the next test. Also, the program offers opportunities to obtain a master’s degree concurrently, such as a master’s in clinical research through the Clinical Research Scholars Program, which is the track I’m pursuing.

Match Day was a stand-out moment for you.

Yes, it was incredible to celebrate the accomplishments and successes of my amazing classmates together with our loved ones and find out where everyone is going for residency.

What drew you to CCLCM?

The chance to develop strong research skills through the research-centered curriculum, combined with the excellent clinical training obtained by rotating through Cleveland Clinic really appealed to me. Additionally, the small class size and resulting ample research and mentorship opportunities felt unparalleled.

Describe your research project.

My mentor, Dr. Allison Vidimos, and I examined the utility of radiologic imaging on high-risk cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma and found that imaging should be included in the management of these tumors. I had the opportunity to present our findings at the Ohio Dermatological Association and the American Academy of Dermatology conferences.

You brought your skills in dermatology to area women’s shelters. Describe the impact.

I developed and co-lead an initiative to bring dermatology education and skincare products to women’s shelters in the Cleveland area. This experience has helped me to recognize the importance of community education and outreach within the field of dermatology and medicine as a whole. It also taught me the power of collaboration and perseverance, particularly when trying to develop an initiative during a pandemic!

What about your education best prepared you for your future?

I feel that we were uniquely well-prepared for our clinical experiences due to our communication skills and physical diagnosis curriculum with standardized patients and longitudinal clinic experiences throughout the first two years. I felt very comfortable going into third-year clinical rotations.

What advice would you give to someone thinking about applying to the program?

It’s an incredible opportunity, particularly if you are interested in research. The small class size provides a unique environment for students to start a new student organization or outreach program. CCLCM is a great place to shape your own educational experience.

What goals did you set for yourself while at CCLCM?

One of my goals was to encourage myself to step outside my comfort zone. Whether it was joining a dance number for the annual Doc Opera show with no prior dance experience or taking on an ambitious role on a research team, these experiences pushed me to grow, and they became some of the most memorable and rewarding moments.

How do you spend your free time?

I enjoy grabbing a meal with friends, rewatching comfort television shows, doodling on my tablet, testing out healthy banana and pumpkin bread recipes and spending time with my husband.

Fun fact?

I minored in Theater Studies in undergrad and loved exploring the London theater scene while studying abroad there for a semester.
