Leading Orthopaedic Surgeon Mr Sam Rajaratnam Moves Full Practice to Cleveland Clinic London

LONDON: Cleveland Clinic London has announced that Mr Sam Rajaratnam, leading consultant orthopaedic surgeon and knee specialist has moved his full surgical practice and team to Cleveland Clinic London.

Mr Rajaratnam is internationally renowned for his pioneering work on making knee replacement surgery less painful and more successful and is also known for developing ROSA® robotics in knee surgery. His high-profile practice is based at Cleveland Clinic London, with outpatient clinics in Cleveland Clinic London Hospital in Belgravia and Portland Place Outpatient Centre in the Harley Street Health District.

He has performed over 8,000 knee replacements through his career (c. 600 partial, full and revision implants each year) with amongst the very best outcomes on the UK National Joint Registry (NJR), and developed a world-class multidisciplinary team in collaboration with Dr Barry Phillips, consultant anaesthetist, to reduce pain around knee replacement surgery. The team has developed minimally invasive surgical techniques and innovative pain protocols that enable patients to comfortably walk just three hours after surgery.

Mr Rajaratnam has one of the lowest revision (failure) rates and best outcomes after knee replacements on the NJR over the last 20 years, and is an advocate for transparent, outcomes-driven healthcare. He is an expert on the ROSA® robotic-assisted knee replacement and was first to implement ROSA® robotic technology within the U.K. private sector.

He also has a successful soft tissue knee injury practice, regularly treating professional and amateur sportspeople with soft tissue injuries to their knee. Mr Rajaratnam has performed over 2,500 ACL reconstructions and many other soft tissue knee reconstructive procedures, and has developed day case knee ligament programmes across various U.K. hospitals. He regularly treats members of the Professional Football Association and is on the regular faculty of the FIFA Football medicine conference each year.

Mr Rajaratnam originally trained at Guy’s and St Thomas’s Hospital in London and qualified with a First Class degree in anatomy and an MBBS in 1997. He trained via the Royal College of Surgeons, England at numerous centres of excellence and was awarded the “Walter Mercer Gold Medal” for the best performance throughout Great Britain and Ireland in the final FRCS Orthopaedics examination in 2006. He was the British Orthopaedic Association Ambassador to Hong Kong, and worked in Australia at some of the world’s best knee units before being appointed Consultant Surgeon in 2008.

Mr Rajaratnam was the director of orthopaedics at the Schoen Clinic London from 2018 to 2023, and was an established consultant knee surgeon at the Horder centre in East Sussex for 17 years before now centralising his team and practice at Cleveland Clinic London. He enjoys an excellent international reputation, and his full practice transition marks a significant milestone in the Cleveland Clinic’s commitment to delivering world-class orthopaedic care.
