How to Boost your Happy Hormones

CLEVELAND - If you’re dealing with the winter blues, you’re not alone.

Many people go through waves of depression this time of year.

The good news is there are ways to help that.

“There isn't one magic formula for boosting our happiness, but there are activities, according to research, that can boost our happiness by triggering happiness hormones,” said Susan Albers, PsyD, psychologist for Cleveland Clinic. “And these include serotonin, oxytocin, endorphins, and dopamine. These hormones together, when they are released, make us feel warm, fuzzy, and release a sense of pleasure.”

Dr. Albers said one of the best ways a person can boost their happy hormones is by exercising.

You can do it anywhere, any time – plus it’s free.

You could also go for a walk outside and get some sunshine.

She said the sun releases the hormone serotonin, which regulates our sleep, appetite and mood.

Some other ways to boost our happy hormones include spending time with family and friends, and doing a hobby you enjoy, like baking or reading.

You could also volunteer, listen to your favorite songs or watch a comedy.

And, of course, what we eat matters too.

“When we eat foods like probiotics, yogurt, pickles, sauerkraut, this helps our gut and our gut in turn helps to regulate our mood,” said Dr. Albers. “Other foods that are helpful are things like turkey which helps to release tryptophan which ultimately helps our serotonin level.”

Dr. Albers also reminds people to make sure they’re getting enough sleep.

Lack of sleep can make us feel more irritable, stressed and anxious.
