CLEVELAND - Spring is officially here – that means longer days and warmer weather.

It’s the perfect time of year to tackle some cleaning, which can declutter both our space and minds.

“When we clean, it improves focus because we're often distracted by clutter and dirt in our environments. Once we get to taking care of it, there are fewer distractions around,”explained Dawn Potter, PsyD, a psychologist for Cleveland Clinic

Along with clearing our minds, Dr. Potter said spring cleaning can help give us a sense of control and accomplishment.

That means taking steps to tidy up our surroundings can give a big boost to our overall mental health.

If you don’t know where to start, Dr. Potter said you can break things down into smaller tasks and tackle the easiest item first.

Don’t be afraid to ask a friend or family member for help either.

With all this in mind, what should you do if procrastination is still getting the best of you?

“Just getting started is really the best approach, and you may not be feeling like it while it's still gray outside. However, capitalize on those good days,” Dr. Potter said. “Once you start, you’ll find that it will be much easier to get through it.”

If you continue struggling with everyday tasks like cleaning, Dr. Potter recommends reaching out to a mental health professional for help.
