LONDON: Cleveland Clinic London is the first to offer robotic focal high-intensity focused ultrasound therapy (HIFU) for prostate cancer in England. Prof Senthil Nathan, Cleveland Clinic London chairman for Urology, led the surgical team during the first procedures.
The urology services at Cleveland Clinic are integrated across the enterprise and multidisciplinary teams to deliver the best care for patients. This collaborative approach ensures that patients benefit from the expertise and shared knowledge of leading specialists across the global Cleveland Clinic network.
Robotic Focal HIFU is a non-invasive treatment that precisely targets a specific section of the prostate using focused ultrasound beams, eliminating the need for major surgery or radiation therapy. The procedure uses a robotic arm positioning system that ensures precise and controlled HIFU ultrasound energy delivery.
Unlike surgery and some forms of radiation therapy, HIFU is a noninvasive outpatient procedure that treats cancer while leaving healthy tissue unharmed. This approach can help reduce common side effects like urinary incontinence and erectile dysfunction.
According to the Cancer Research UK, prostate cancer is the most common cancer in men in the UK, which is why early detection is so important.
“Prostate cancer treatment depends on how advanced the cancer is and what is right for each individual,” said Prof Senthil Nathan, Cleveland Clinic London chairman for urology and a consultant urological and robotic surgeon. “HIFU offers patients a less invasive option that uses ultrasound waves to target the cancer and reduces the risk of damage to the healthy tissue.”
Using a machine designed for HIFU, a urologist inserts a small, ultrasound probe into the patient’s rectum, positioning it close to the walnut-sized prostate. The probe’s imaging device scans the prostate, creating a 3D computerized map of the area to be treated. The urologist views the results, and carries out the treatment, focusing waves of ultrasound directly onto the cancerous tissue.
The device emits high-intensity and highly focused sound waves that destroy (or ablate) the targeted tissue area.
“Throughout Cleveland Clinic’s global network, we come together with the latest research, advanced technology and leading specialists to deliver the highest standard of prostate care,” said Jihad Kaouk, M.D., FACS, enterprise chair of Urology at Cleveland Clinic. “By sharing knowledge and best practices across locations, we offer consistent care no matter where our patients are.”
The urology services at Cleveland Clinic are integrated across all locations so that multidisciplinary teams are able to deliver the best care for patients. This collaborative approach ensures that patients benefit from the expertise and shared knowledge of leading specialists across Cleveland Clinic locations, including the United States, London and Abu Dhabi.
“This latest treatment option represents the future of urologic oncology care in the UK and reflects our commitment to leading the way in innovation,” said Prof Nathan. “At Cleveland Clinic London, we are continually looking for ways to improve the patient experience with the latest technologies.”
