CLEVELAND - You’ve probably seen the headlines about a parasite called Cyclospora making people sick across the United States.

According to Neha Vyas, MD, family medicine physician at Cleveland Clinic, specific testing is required to detect it in those experiencing symptoms.

“If you do fear that you have it, there is a special test that the lab needs to run, which is separate from the testing that we do for bacterial illnesses. So, if you fear you've been exposed, please make note of that and tell your doctor accordingly,” said Dr. Vyas.

Dr. Vyas said the parasite has previously been found in berries, bagged salad mix, pre-cut vegetables, and fresh herbs, such as basil and cilantro.

While anyone is at risk of getting sick, those who are immunocompromised are especially vulnerable.

It can take up to a week for symptoms to develop, which can include diarrhea, severe cramping, bloating, nausea and fatigue.

However, most people can recover at home with plenty of rest and water.

“Make sure you're staying hydrated. You can eat soft, bland foods until you start to feel better,” she said. “Bananas, rice, applesauce and toast are always good.”

In severe cases, a person may need antibiotics.

“Be on the lookout for it and seek medical attention if your symptoms are more than just a common 24-hour GI bug,” she advised.

Dr. Vyas said the best thing you can do for prevention is to thoroughly wash your fruits and vegetables under running water before eating.

You should also wash your hands before and after preparing any food.
