Cleveland Clinic Weston Hospital Brings Advanced MediView Imaging Technology to Florida

Cleveland Clinic Weston Hospital is the first medical center in Florida to offer access to MediView XR90^TM surgical navigation and intelligence platform, marking an important step forward in image-guided care and minimally invasive procedures.

The extended reality technology allows physicians to view and combine multiple imaging modalities during procedures, helping enhance visualization, improve precision and support a more seamless experience for both patients and care teams.

“Normally, we would do a biopsy, for example, with ultrasound guidance,” said Dr. Kevin Stadtlander, site director of the interventional radiology residency program at Cleveland Clinic Weston Hospital.

“Extended reality allows us to take CT images that have been acquired ahead of time and use those to create a holographic 3D image of the patient’s anatomy that we can see in our headset as we’re looking at the patient and doing a procedure with ultrasound.”

By blending CT and ultrasound in real time, the technology gives physicians a more comprehensive view during procedures without exposing patients to radiation during the intervention itself. This ability to use more than one imaging guidance method at the same time can potentially help improve safety, accuracy and efficiency.

“The technology is going to help us the most when we consider combining multiple imaging modalities,” Dr. Stadtlander said. “Normally, we would use one imaging modality, such as CT or ultrasound, to do a biopsy. In this case, extended reality allows us to combine two different imaging modalities, CT and ultrasound, in real time, to do a procedure such as a biopsy.”

Cleveland Clinic Weston Hospital plans to use the technology initially for biopsies, particularly in complex cases where additional imaging detail may be especially valuable. Over time, the hospital expects to explore broader applications, including treatment procedures such as thermal ablation, as the technology continues to evolve.

For physicians, the headset also offers ergonomic benefits by allowing them to keep their focus directly on the patient rather than turning to view monitors placed around the room. That streamlined workflow can support operator comfort while maintaining constant visual access to critical imaging information.

“This technology allows us to do certain things in an easier fashion than we previously were able to,” Dr. Stadtlander said. “If we can see better, we can do better.”

As part of its commitment to innovation, Cleveland Clinic Weston Hospital will use the MediView system in both clinical care and research. The hospital also expects the technology to support future advances in physician education and collaboration, including opportunities to work closely with colleagues across the Cleveland Clinic system.

The first case performed with the technology at Cleveland Clinic Weston Hospital involved a patient with a small liver lesion in a difficult-to-reach area. By using CT and ultrasound simultaneously, physicians were able to better visualize the lesion and perform a biopsy with greater confidence.

The addition of MediView imaging systems reflects Cleveland Clinic Weston Hospital’s continued focus on bringing leading-edge tools to patients in South Florida and expanding what is possible in image-guided medicine.
