CLEVELAND - A pumpkin isn't just a fall decoration to set out on your front porch.

The seasonal squash can also be a healthy addition to a variety of meals.

"I don't think people realize how versatile pumpkin is. You can incorporate it into a variety of dishes, especially when it's paired with warm spices like cardamom and curry,” said Beth Czerwony, RD, registered dietitian at Cleveland Clinic.

According to Czerwony, pumpkin is packed with nutrients, including vitamin A for eye health, fiber for digestion and antioxidants that help protect your cells.

It's also low in calories and can help keep you feeling fuller longer.

Czerwony said pumpkin can be used in both sweet and savory dishes, from soups and chili to oatmeal and pancakes.

You can even roast the seeds for a crunchy snack that's rich in protein, healthy fats and minerals like magnesium.

To get your fix this season, Czerwony recommends using actual pumpkin instead of pumpkin-flavored products.

"This time of year, it's easy to get excited about all things pumpkin. But many pumpkin-flavored products are highly processed and contain a lot of added sugar, like lattes and cereals,” Czerwony said.

While pumpkin gets the most attention in the fall, Czerwony added that canned pumpkin makes it possible to enjoy the nutritional benefits all year long.
