Following a successful audition, Julia Joo (’25) was accepted into the Cleveland Orchestra Chorus, one of the leading orchestra choruses in the US and one in which all of its volunteer singers are professionally trained.
Singing in a chorus, especially with the backing of a great orchestra, is one of Julia’s favorite things in the world. During her gap years, she sang with the Seattle Symphony Chorale and loved performing masterworks with a talented ensemble.
When she moved to Cleveland from Seattle, one of the things she was most excited about was getting to see the world-renowned Cleveland Orchestra. After seeing the orchestra perform at Blossom Music Center this summer, she was tremendously moved and inspired.
“Listening to the exquisite live music with birds chirping harmoniously overhead, I knew I needed to at least try to be a part of creating this experience,” she says. “I know rehearsals and concerts will be a lot to juggle with being an M2, but I’m certain it will be worth it!”
Although the chorus frequently tours throughout the US and Europe, Julia believes they are staying local this year because of the pandemic.
“I have really missed singing with others over the past couple years and am so happy that we can finally sing together again safely. Everyone in the chorus is vaccinated. We sing in masks and will maintain distance as much as possible,” she says, adding that their first rehearsal is this month.
Begun in 1952, the Cleveland Orchestra Chorus celebrates its 70th anniversary next year.
