Student Spotlight: Matthew Russell

CCLCM student Matt Russell

After graduating from the Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine on May 21, Matthew Russell (’23) reminisces fondly about his time at CCLCM.

“It’s just been a beyond-positive experience for me. Genuinely the most relaxed learning environment with the most supportive and caring people who truly want you to succeed,” Matthew says.

Prior to attending medical school at CCLCM, Matthew earned a degree in biology from John Carroll University. When conducting his search for the perfect medical school, he was drawn to CCLCM’s program because of its strong emphasis on research. Among his accomplishments while at CCLCM, he takes particular pride in having the opportunity to present his research on retinal flavoprotein fluorescence at the American Academy of Ophthalmology, an experience that showcased his dedication and expertise in the field.

Matthew plans to train in ophthalmology at Cleveland Clinic.

The curriculum at CCLCM prepared Matthew quite well for his future, he says. He refined his critical thinking skills and was encouraged to ask insightful questions. One aspect that really stood out to him and significantly impacted his medical education was his participation in the Community Health Initiative, a program in which medical students provide healthcare services to the residents of the Lutheran Metropolitan Ministries’ Men’s Shelter in Cleveland.

“It really heightened my awareness of healthcare disparities and emphasized the importance of addressing them. These are local communities that are struggling — literally a stone’s throw away. We should be taking care of our communities; it’s the right thing to do,” Matthew says.

Looking back, Matthew wishes he had received advice to relax, work hard and trust that everything would work out in the end.

“The one thing I’ve learned from being here is that all of your classmates are just the best people and the best students in the world. Like everyone says, ‘comparison is the thief of joy.’ You just need to be goal-oriented and happy with what you plan to do, and you’ll be okay,” he says.

In his leisure time, Matthew enjoys rock climbing and listening to alternative rock music at various venues around Cleveland. He and his classmates once participated in a “Hot Ones” challenge, asking each other deep-dive questions while tasting hot sauces with varying degrees of heat.

Matthew looks forward to continuing his medical career at Cleveland Clinic and can’t wait to see what the future holds!
