The Proof of Concept Office is pleased to announce the new class of Innovation Fellows.
The two-year Innovation Fellows program provides Cleveland Clinic employees with an opportunity to gain classroom and hands-on experience in technology development and commercialization one day per week. The goal is to train the next generation of technology development professionals for the benefit of Cleveland Clinic, the regional economy and the Fellows themselves. Please join us in welcoming this year’s class!
Ian Houlihan is a postdoctoral fellow in the laboratory of Vijay Krishna, PhD, in the Biomedical Engineering Department where he is working on the development of a novel nanotechnology based solution for the treatment of urinary calculi. His previous research at the University of Limerick (Ireland) involved the development of novel implantable cements for orthopedic applications. His career has a heavy focus on materials development for better patient outcomes. Ian holds a PhD in Biomedical Engineering from the University of Limerick. In his free time he enjoys spending time with his family. He is an avid sports fan and enjoys watching rugby and Formula One racing and also enjoys building LEGOs.
Jayadev (Jay) Joshi is a postdoctoral fellow in the laboratory of Daniel Blankenberg, PhD, at the Genomic Medicine Institute, Lerner Research Institute (LRI). For the past five years, he has been working as a bioinformatics researcher, focusing on areas such as machine learning, big data, and NGS data analysis. His primary work involves developing new tools, workflows, and pipelines that can be seamlessly integrated under Galaxy (usegalaxy.org), a browser-based software for biomedical data analysis. Before joining Cleveland Clinic, Jayadev worked as a Project Scientist at the Biomedical Informatics Center, National Institute of Cholera and Enteric Diseases (NICED) in Kolkata, India. He holds a PhD degree and conducted research at the Institute of Nuclear Medicine and Allied Sciences, DRDO, Delhi, India, where he applied bioinformatics approaches to identify suitable targets for drug repurposing of established drugs as radioprotectors. Additionally, he holds a Master’s degree in Molecular and Human Genetics from Jiwaji University, Gwalior, India. In his free time, Jayadev enjoys hiking, traveling, and using 3D printing to create tools, devices, and art.
Powrnima (Pow) Joshi is a biomedical research consultant and contractor. She holds a doctorate in cell and molecular biology. Pow has worked in device development field for a decade; her contributions are in cancer diagnostics and stem cells for bone regeneration in the lab of Dr. Maciej Zborowski, in the Department of Biomedical Engineering, LRI. She has worked with multi-disciplinary teams alongside clinicians, oncologists, engineers, physicists, and biologists. She has previously led the filing of IP disclosures and generated marketing documents with Cleveland Clinic Innovations. She, along with her colleagues, received 2011 Innovation Award from Cleveland Clinic Innovations. Among her varied interests she pursues in her free time, she also volunteers in her community.
Kyle O’Laughlin is a Lead Research Technologist in the laboratory of Ela Plow, PhD, specializing in neuromodulation and upper limb rehabilitation. He has been with Cleveland Clinic since 2016 and specializes in assessing upper limb motor impairments and functional ability, collecting neurophysiology outcome metrics, and clinical trial management. Kyle has also been a member of the LRI Tech Leadership Council since 2021. He received his MS in Exercise Science and Health Promotions from California University of Pennsylvania and received his BS from John Carroll University. He is a Cleveland-born native and is a huge fan of Cleveland sports teams. In his free time, Kyle enjoys spending time with his wife, Angel, and three kids, Anthony, Alissa, and Michael, golfing, and playing soccer.
Priya Putta is a Research Associate at LRI in the laboratory of Linda Graham, MD, with over 10 years of life science research experience. Priya has been extremely active during her time at LRI. She has been an awardee of the Leadership and Service Award, held a role as an executive board member at the Lerner Trainee Association and is an active member of the Heart Call team. Priya is passionate about lipids in (cardio)vascular healing and mentoring budding scientists. She looks forward to bringing her scientific curiosity, years of bench research, and keen interest in intellectual property to the Innovations Fellows Program to learn and excel in technology transfer and commercialization. Outside of work, Priya enjoys kayaking and biking. She received her Master’s in Microbiology from University of Mumbai and PhD in Cell Biology from Kent State University.
