CLEVELAND - As forecasters keep a close watch on Hurricane Francine, it’s important to remember the basics when it comes to weathering the storm.

“Always plan ahead by making sure you have a list of priority items and talk to your doctor about things you should consider – especially if you have a chronic medical illness,” said Aisha Subhani, DO, emergency medicine physician for Cleveland Clinic Florida.

Along with stocking up on food and water, Dr. Subhani said it’s crucial you have enough medicine as well.

If you’re on a daily medication, talk to your doctor early to get enough of a supply to last if you can’t get to the pharmacy.

As an emergency physician, Dr. Subhani added a lot of injuries stem from people boarding up their windows ahead of the storm.

Be careful when using ladders and other tools to secure your home.

And for any storm, Dr. Subhani said it’s important to always listen to emergency officials.

“Follow the guidelines and instructions from authorities. Please don't ignore them,” Dr. Subhani said. “If you're in an evacuation zone and it's mandatory, take heed and leave. There’s no property of yours that's worth more than your life.”

If you encounter flood waters at any point, don’t try to walk or drive through them.

Dr. Subhani said it’s best to find a different route because you don’t know what’s in the water or how deep it is.

You also want to avoid downed wires and other debris.
