CLEVELAND - A fall hike is a great way to enjoy the cooler weather, but it's important to prepare before venturing into nature.

“To make your hike safer and more enjoyable – know your limits, plan ahead, bring the right equipment and be sure to make smart choices while you’re out,” explained Christopher Bazzoli, MD, emergency medicine physician for Cleveland Clinic.

Dr. Bazzoli said setting realistic expectations is crucial, so hikers don’t end up hurt from pushing themselves too far.

He stressed it’s best to plan a route based on your fitness level and make sure you can navigate it without relying on a cellphone for GPS in case service goes out.

Remember to check the weather as well and dress in layers so you can adjust depending on the temperature.

Some other essential hiking items include sunscreen, bug spray, and most importantly, food and water.

Above all, let someone else know you’re going on a hike in case anything goes wrong.

“Whether it’s a family member, friend or someone at the ranger station, it’s really important to let someone who’s not on the hike know about your planned route,” Dr. Bazzoli said. “You can also tell them that you’ll check in with them at a certain time – that way, they’ll know something might be wrong if they don’t hear from you.”

During the hike, Dr. Bazzoli said to use your body as your guide and turn around early if you start feeling tired.
