Cleveland Clinic inventors Andre Machado MD, PhD, Sean Nagel, MD and Pablo Recinos, MD, share their innovations on cerebrospinal procedures and their influence on patient care as part of Cleveland Clinic Innovations’ Inventor Chronicle series.
Each episode of the Inventor Chronicles follows a different inventor’s journey, from initial inspiration to life-changing invention.
The recent Inventor Chronicle featured insights from Cleveland Clinic inventors, Andre Machado MD, PhD, Sean Nagel, MD and Pablo Recinos, MD who discussed their innovative device designed for cerebrospinal surgery. The colleagues shared their journey of developing a novel bur hole device aimed at improving the accuracy and safety of brain surgery procedures. The device not only serves to anchor the lead in place but also manages brain shift by creating a constant flow of fluid to minimize the likelihood of air entry in the brain. Their in-depth discussion shed light on the potential impact of their invention on improving patient outcomes and safety during procedures like deep brain stimulation, laser probe placements, and biopsies.
This conversation also delved into an innovation in neuro navigation. The inventors highlighted their development of a lattice patch or spider-like device that attaches to the forehead and auto-registers, eliminating the need for manual registration during neuro-navigation procedures. This advancement aims to streamline the process of registering a patient's head for an imaging study, ultimately enhancing the precision and efficiency of intracranial interventions. The Inventor Chronicle provided a fascinating insight into the cutting-edge inventions shaping the future of neurosurgery and patient care.
