Information on Recent Settlement

Cleveland Clinic Statement:

"We are pleased to have worked collaboratively toward a resolution related to an unintentional coding issue involving a small number of patients. We remain focused on providing exceptional care to our patients and communities. We have complied and will continue to comply with all federal and state laws."

Additional Background

Clarification on key points from the settlement:

  • The care we provide today for patients does not change. We will continue to provide care for LGBTQ+ patients 19 and older, including the services and clinics currently in place in Ohio and Florida.
  • We can continue to provide psychological and psychiatric treatment for minors and adults.
  • Practices were not changed because of the settlement. Cleveland Clinic has always provided care under the laws in place and will continue to do so.
    • For awareness, in 2024 Cleveland Clinic complied when the Ohio law changed under House Bill 68 (the SAFE Act), which forbids medical providers from prescribing puberty blockers and hormone therapy to transgender minors.
  • The 20-year ban on providing gender-related care for minors was modified from the possibility of a permanent ban. Ohio and Florida laws currently prohibit medical and surgical gender-affirming care for minors, and Cleveland Clinic follows the law.
  • Cleveland Clinic did not establish a new detransitioning clinic. These are services we already provide in rare circumstances when a patient requests them. We have agreed to provide up to $2 million in value which includes financial support for eligible patients whose insurance does not cover the full amount of care or who cannot afford it.
