CLEVELAND - If you’re tired of dating apps, you’re not alone.
It’s easy to feel burnt out after swiping through hundreds of profiles.
“Online dating can be taxing to the brain because it involves many cognitive processes to sort through all of the information and the choices. This can lead to decision fatigue, feeling overwhelmed by the number of choices, which can leave you feeling paralyzed and emotionally drained,” said Susan Albers, PsyD, psychologist at Cleveland Clinic.
Dr. Albers said signs of online dating fatigue can include feeling anxious, numb, constantly checking the apps, and having a sense of dread.
It may also start to feel more like a job.
She explains that it’s natural to be overwhelmed by the process, but it shouldn’t impact your mood or self-image.
If it does and you find yourself saying things like, ‘I’m never going to meet someone’ or ‘This is pointless,’ it’s best to take a break.
“Create some boundaries around the amount of time that you spend online. This is going to help you engage in your everyday activities, connecting with friends, hobbies and exercise. That gives your brain an opportunity to rest and boost your energy,” she said.
Dr. Albers adds that it can also help to reframe your mindset.
Instead of looking at a date as good or bad, consider it an opportunity to learn more about yourself and what you want in a partner.
