How Robotics are Advancing Breast Cancer Surgery

CLEVELAND - October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

Reports show one in eight women in the United States will develop breast cancer.

And some may have to undergo a mastectomy, which can now be performed robotically.

“I perform the same nipple-sparing mastectomy that I would through a traditional open approach. The breast skin and nipple are preserved while all of the underlying breast tissue is carefully removed intact. The plastic surgeon then performs the reconstruction through that same small incision,” explained Stephanie Valente, DO, FACS, breast surgical oncologist at Cleveland Clinic.

Dr. Valente said unlike traditional surgery, the surgeon operates the robot from a console while a medical team closely monitors the patient.

She said there are benefits to using the device, including the ability to better see and work around blood vessels and nerves.

Recovery time tends to be quicker too since the incisions are smaller.

"Women who are having this procedure are saying that their healing time has improved, their nipple sensation is improved, and we're seeing a lot less complication rates,” she said.

She notes that not all breast cancer patients are eligible for the robotic procedure at this time.
