As the first organisation in the United Kingdom with this designation, Cleveland Clinic London is setting a high standard for nurse transition-to-practice programmes
Cleveland Clinic London’s Newly Qualified Nurse(NQN) Residency Preceptorship Programme is the first in the United Kingdom to earn accreditation through the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) Practice Transition Accreditation Program® (PTAP).
PTAP is a global leader in accreditation for nurse residency and fellowship programmes. It evaluates a residency or fellowship programme’s adherence to established standards and its ability to provide comprehensive education and training to its learners.
This accreditation affirms that Cleveland Clinic London’s transition-to-practice programme meets rigorous national standards for quality, outcomes and continuous improvement, distinguishing it as a premier destination for nurses entering the profession or transitioning into new practice settings. The ANCC accreditation process began in January 2026 and included a comprehensive self-study, caregiver surveys, and a virtual site visit conducted by accreditation reviewers.
“This acknowledgement reflects the quality of Cleveland Clinic London’s nurse residency preceptorship programme and the dedication of our caregivers to supporting and developing nursing professionals,” said Beri Ridgeway, M.D., president of Cleveland Clinic London. “I am proud of the caregivers whose expertise, mentorship and commitment made this achievement possible. Their efforts strengthen the care we provide for our patients and communities.”
Cleveland Clinic London’s NQN Residency Preceptorship Programme is aligned with ANCC PTAP and the UK Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) and Health Education England (HEE) Preceptorship standards. The programme launched in 2024 with seven newly qualified nurses, including residents in both dedicated specialty and multi-specialty placements. Participants practiced in several inpatient specialties, including cardiovascular services, thoracic, digestive diseases and general surgery, orthopaedics, neurosciences and rehabilitation.
“This accreditation recognises the outstanding work of our preceptors, educators and nursing teams in supporting newly qualified nurses as they transition into practice,” said Tiina Thornton, MSc, RN, Chief Nursing Officer at Cleveland Clinic London. “We are committed to providing the guidance and learning opportunities nurses need to grow professionally and build successful careers.”
PTAP accreditation validates that a transition-to-practice programme is:
