Congratulations to Metabel Markwei (‘22), who recently won the Medical Student Award from the Cleveland Society of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, an award for the “best medical student” in Cleveland pursuing a career in Ob/Gyn. She was nominated for the award by Diane Young, MD, Assistant Professor of Ob/Gyn and Reproductive Biology, and Ob/Gyn Clerkship Director, and Oluwatosin Goje, MD, Associate Professor of Ob/Gyn and Reproductive Biology.
Dr. Young says that she has always been particularly impressed by Metabel’s inquisitive nature. “Metabel served as student lead for the Ob/Gyn Interest Group, and she found ways to explore the field of Ob/Gyn by having small group teaching seminars and interactive sessions with faculty,” says Dr. Young, adding that Metabel has consistently been a stand-out student.
“She is involved in advocacy work on many fronts, from working to improve quality of care for under-resourced patients to working to reduce unconscious bias, infant mortality, maternal mortality and racism in healthcare,” says Dr. Young. “We are fortunate to have a student with great passion, commitment and dedication learning to become a competent obstetrician and gynecologist.”
Metabel expresses deep gratitude to Drs. Young and Goje for the nomination. “I owe this and many other career-defining moments to their sponsorship, putting my name in spaces I otherwise would not have found myself.”
Metabel will receive her award at the society’s meeting on March 16, 2022.
