Sherman Prize recipients are high performers from a variety of professional disciplines who represent “Excellence in Crohn’s and Colitis” in their chosen endeavors, having dedicated their careers to the fight to overcome IBD.
Thaddeus Stappenbeck, MD, PhD, has been awarded the prestigious Sherman Prize in recognition of his exceptional and pioneering contributions to transform medical care for people IBD. The Sherman Prize is awarded to three individuals annually by The Bruce and Cynthia Sherman Charitable Foundation.
Dr. Stappenbeck serves as the chair of Inflammation and Immunity at Cleveland Clinic’s Lerner Research Institute. His passion for science, math, and the natural world has lead to groundbreaking discoveries for people with Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis, also known as Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD). Dr. Stappenbeck’s contribution to the understanding of the microbiome and IBD is exemplary. His innovative use of endoscopic biopsies to study wound healing in the colon has led to significant breakthroughs. Dr. Stappenbeck’s ultimate goal is to ward off disease before it starts using computational methods, big data, and artificial intelligence. He also works with Color of Crohn’s & Chronic Illness to improve access to care and information for people of color, indigenous, and low-income patients with IBD.
