From the Dean’s Desk | Experience the Pulse of Medical Education

J. Harry "Bud" Isaacson, MD

As I walk through the Health Education Campus, I’m struck by the sights and sounds: a group of students wrestling with a case study, lively discussions emanating from classrooms, and students and faculty exchanging ideas about a community project. The campus is abuzz with activity, with 2,200 medical, nursing, physician assistant and dental medicine students busily training as healthcare providers, and hundreds of faculty members and employees actively engaged in helping the students achieve their goal. I am filled with both a sense of purpose and pride for all the extraordinary activities that take place within these walls.

This year, the Health Education Campus will be the site of three important events, and I invite you to consider attending one or more of them:

2024 Climate and Health Education Summit, March 14 and 15. This two-day summit is designed for health educators who wish to integrate climate change education into their curricula and health delivery systems, with the aim of improving patient care and addressing healthcare disparities. Attend the summit to get the latest information on the health impacts of climate change, discover best practices and find out how you can serve as a climate health advocate in your organization and community. Students attend for free. Learn more and register.

John P. Murphy Symposium in Medical Humanities, April 6. This one-day event will feature Lefkowich Keynote Speaker Suzanne Koven, MD, MFA, author of “Letter to a Young Female Physician;” several workshops; presentations by area students, faculty and health humanities scholars; visual art exhibits; and poetry readings. The event is sponsored by CCLCM, CWRU, Northeast Ohio Medical University (NEOMED) and Ohio University Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine (OUHCOM). Register here.

Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine 20th Anniversary Celebration, July 26–28. All former and current CCLCM students and faculty, spouses, partners and families are cordially invited to help us celebrate our 20th anniversary. Activities for the weekend include a welcome reception, State of the College Address, campus tours, presentations, optional day of Cleveland sightseeing and more. Please stay tuned for details.

If you are able to participate in one of these events, you’ll have the chance to witness firsthand the steady hum of activity within these four walls. If you do, I hope you’ll come away with a renewed appreciation for our purpose, which is to drive our students forward on their path to healing and service, and, ultimately, to make a positive impact on the world.
