The United Kingdom's National Health Service (NHS), serving a population of 68 million, spent £239 billion in 2023, making up 11.1% of the gross national product. This represents both an opportunity and a challenge for startups in health and medical technology space as they seek to market new digital products to the U.K. health system. For instance, Strolll, a company that developed an augmented reality platform for neurological conditions, faced early financial constraints but managed to secure collaborations with the NHS and Cleveland Clinic.

The company's success was also attributed to the NHS's support for innovators, evidenced by various programs and initiatives designed to facilitate engagement with startups. The process from concept to reality involved extensive groundwork, research collaborations, and securing funding and regulatory approvals. The NHS's willingness to engage with young companies and its support programs played a crucial role in the company's progress. Strolll's collaboration with the NHS not only enabled it to gather clinical evidence and funding but also provided unique insights into the requirements and constraints of the healthcare system. The relationship between innovators and the UK health service has impacted the funding landscape, with grant money being readily available for companies in this sector. Moving forward, Strolll aims to focus on the U.S. market, although the U.K. health ecosystem remains a fertile ground for health tech companies, with significant investment flowing in, partly due to support from the NHS.

Stroll's collaboration with Cleveland Clinic marks an important milestone in the company's growth. The $3 million agreement involves Cleveland Clinic acquiring an equity stake in the U.K. company. Furthermore, a therapeutic tool created by Cleveland Clinic will be incorporated into the Stroll platform. With the use of augmented reality (AR), there is potential to expand its therapy services to patients' homes.
