Collaboration applies AI automation to complex administrative processes at enterprise scale – with fax referral transcription as the first use case
CLEVELAND, Ohio, and SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. – Cleveland Clinic and Luminai, an AI-native enterprise automation platform for health system operations, announced a partnership to co-develop and deploy AI automation across complex administrative workflows. The collaboration is designed to reduce manual administrative work, improve operational reliability, and allow clinical and operational staff to enhance patient care and experience. Cleveland Clinic, one of the world’s most respected health systems, will deploy Luminai to support high-impact use cases across the enterprise that involve unstructured data, multiple hand-offs, and complex and unique decision-making.
“Automation only delivers value when it reflects the realities of clinical and operational work,” said Rohit Chandra, Ph.D., Chief Digital Officer at Cleveland Clinic. “Our collaboration with Luminai allows us to apply AI in ways that meaningfully support our teams by reducing administrative burden and improving patient satisfaction.”
The collaboration's first focus area is processing external referrals. Many referrals still arrive by fax, and sorting, prioritizing, and transcribing them into the EMR is typically done manually. Luminai's AI system identifies which incoming documents are referrals, understands their clinical context, matches the patient/order type, and transcribes them into the EMR for follow-up. Automating this work can connect patients to the right care more quickly. Over time, the platform learns and incorporates organization-specific context, allowing subsequent use cases to be deployed more quickly.
While referral processing is the initial focus, the operational pattern it addresses — high volumes of unstructured documentation, multiple manual hand-offs, and time-sensitive decision-making — is common across many administrative functions in health systems. Cleveland Clinic and Luminai expect learnings from this initial deployment to inform how similar processes are approached elsewhere in the organization.
As part of the collaboration, Luminai's forward-deployed engineering team works alongside Cleveland Clinic's clinical and operational staff to adapt the automation workflows, rather than rolling out a standardized configuration. The approach is designed to shorten the time between initial deployment and measurable operational impact.
“Healthcare organizations have an opportunity to use AI to modernize and transform operations while still relying on their existing systems of record,” said Kesava Kirupa Dinakaran, Founder and CEO of Luminai. “Luminai exists to provide a flexible automation platform that can support many high-impact use cases and grow with the organization. Our engineers work embedded with Cleveland Clinic's teams so the technology reflects the actual realities of their operations. Collaborating with Cleveland Clinic is an opportunity to demonstrate what enterprise-grade AI automation can look like in one of the most demanding healthcare environments.”
