CLEVELAND - Is fall the ultimate cozy season?

With many eagerly welcoming the first day of fall, a psychologist explains why this time of year feels so comforting.

"Fall is the opening chapter of the holiday season. The cool air, festive decorations and changing leaves signal the approach of the holidays, bringing a sense of excitement and anticipation,” explained Susan Albers, PsyD, a psychologist at Cleveland Clinic.

Along with kicking off the holiday season, Dr. Albers said fall reintroduces cozy flavors like pumpkin and cinnamon.

The cooler temperatures this time of year also mean hot drinks, oversized sweaters and warm blankets.

Meanwhile, taking part in nostalgic fall activities like hayrides and apple picking offers us comfort as well. 

Dr. Albers said embracing all the coziness fall brings can boost our moods by increasing feel-good chemicals in the brain.

On the other hand, the change of season can be more stressful for some.

“Many people enjoy fall, but it also signals that the colder, darker months are coming, which may trigger seasonal affective disorder,” Dr. Albers said. “If you notice the change of season brings some dread or difficulty, connect with a mental health professional. They can help you identify ways of coping with the change of the season.”

Whether you love fall or hate it, Dr. Albers said it’s important to find activities you can enjoy throughout all the seasons to make these transitions easier.
