Donors have raised over $50 million for “The Cosgrove Transformation Campaign,” which was established to honor the career and legacy of Toby Cosgrove, M.D., the out-going CEO and president of Cleveland Clinic.
Robert E. Rich Jr, chair of the Cleveland Clinic’s Board of Directors, made the announcement at a special event Saturday night that honored Dr. Cosgrove’s career. The campaign was designed to inspire innovation, support research, further education, and continue to improve the patient experience in areas that donors directed their gifts to honor of Dr. Cosgrove.
“The money raised through this campaign will expand on the monumental contributions Toby has made in revolutionizing healthcare and will strengthen Cleveland Clinic’s position as a pioneer in medicine,” said Rich. “In his nearly 13 years as CEO and president, Toby put patients at the center of their healthcare experience, fostered a culture of innovation and increased Cleveland Clinic’s presence locally, nationally and internationally.
“In short, Toby helped make Cleveland Clinic what it is today: a world leader in patient experience, clinical outcomes, research and education.”
More than 300 people donated to the campaign, with donations as large as $5 million and as modest as $10. “This really started as a grass roots effort to honor our good friend Toby and became so much more” said Rich. “We have been encouraged to keep this special campaign open-ended beyond this evening.”
Tomislav “Tom” Mihaljevic, M.D. – a cardiothoracic surgeon and CEO of Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi – will succeed Dr. Cosgrove as the hospital system’s CEO and president effective Jan. 1, 2018.
“I’m beyond honored by the extremely generous contributions people have made to the transformation campaign,” Dr. Cosgrove said. “Though the campaign may carry my name, it is the donors’ altruism, Dr. Mihaljevic’s leadership, and our caregivers’ talent and commitment that will propel Cleveland Clinic forward to new heights.”
The Cosgrove Transformation Campaign is part of the Cleveland Clinic’s Power of Everyone $2 billion campaign.
