Cleveland Clinic inventor Glenn Werneburg, MD, PhD, shares his research and its influence on patient care as part of Cleveland Clinic Innovations’ Inventor Chronicle series.
Each episode of the inventor chronicles follows a different inventor’s journey, from initial inspiration to life-changing invention.
Dr. Werneburg, a Resident Physician and Physician-scientist in the Department of Urology at Cleveland Clinic is advocating for the enhancement of antibiotic stewardship. Dr. Werneburg emphasized the need for developing a series of algorithms that can accurately predict the resistance and sensitivity of different cultures to specific antibiotics. He explained, "We were interested in developing a series of algorithms to accurately predict which culture would be resistant and which would be sensitive to these different antibiotics. So, we developed these algorithms, they incorporated a number of patient factors that are all available from electronic medical records."
Reflecting on his work, Dr. Werneburg expressed, "It’s exciting to make the discovery and be the first one to figure something out about the world, but it’s even more exciting to be able to treat a patient and to make a difference in his or her life," underscoring the profound sense of honor he feels in his role.
