LONDON: Cleveland Clinic London and Bupa UK Insurance have launched a new value-based healthcare pilot programme focused on enhancing outcomes in cardiac care, building on the success of their first initiative in arthroplasty. The expansion reflects the organisations’ shared commitment to delivering world‑class, patient‑centred healthcare.

Cleveland Clinic has a history of supporting care models that link payment to patient outcomes. This new cardiac care pilot with Bupa continues that leadership by applying a value‑based approach to one of the most complex and critical areas of medicine.

The cardiac initiative follows the strong performance of the first value‑based collaboration in arthroplasty between Cleveland Clinic and Bupa, introduced in 2024, which showed exceptional safety, quality, and patient experience metrics. Arthroplasty patient-reported outcome scores showed an average improvement of 63% from baseline, with no significant clinical complications observed across the cohort. Building on that foundation, the new programme will focus on improving outcomes for patients undergoing a range of cardiac treatment such as electrophysiology, interventional cardiology and cardiac surgery.

As part of the agreement, Bupa and Cleveland Clinic London will continue to offer a no‑shortfall guarantee for consultant fees. This ensures that Bupa members will not face unexpected out‑of‑pocket consultant charges—even when fees exceed their coverage allowance—resulting in a more seamless and predictable care experience.

The programme’s value‑based structure ties Cleveland Clinic’s reimbursement to measurable health improvement, encouraging enhanced coordination, continuity of care, and long‑term patient wellbeing. By moving further away from traditional fee‑for‑service models, the organisations together aim to promote more effective and efficient care plans for cardiac patients.

“Cleveland Clinic is recognised globally for its expertise in heart care and its commitment to putting patients first,” said Bernard Prendergast, D.M., chair of Cardiology at Cleveland Clinic London. “Our aim is to deliver high quality and transparent care to every patient. We’re pleased to extend our value-based care collaboration into cardiac care, where positive outcomes can extend longevity and improve quality of life.”

Dr. Ravi Lukha, Medical Director for Bupa UK Insurance, said: “Building on the encouraging results from our arthroplasty pilot, we're pleased to extend this approach into the more complex field of cardiac care. Working with Cleveland Clinic London will help us understand how innovative reimbursement models can support high-quality, patient-centred care, in line with Bupa’s purpose of helping people live longer, healthier, happier lives.”
